Outdoor Facility
AIRPORT SPORTS COMPLEX
The Airport Sports Complex is an economically self-sustaining multi-sport recreational facility that would allow families in Marin County the opportunity to recreate year round on safe, all-weather fields and courts- all built without a dime of taxpayer funds. The Airport Sports Complex is proposed for 9.1 acres on the San Rafael Airport property and includes indoor sports fields and recreation as well as outdoor soccer fields and practice areas.
Outdoor Recreational Fields
The project includes one lighted regulation-size soccer field and one unlighted soccer warm-up and stretching area. The lighted soccer fields will be Field Turf synthetic sports field surfaces which will allow for all weather use. The soccer warm-up and stretching area will be covered in grass.
Hours of Operation
Outdoor soccer is proposed to operate weekdays from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM and weekends from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Field Turf synthetic turf systems have exploded onto the scene of soccer because of the surface offers all weather playing, reduces player injuries and maintenance costs.
Does San Rafael Need More Sports Fields? YES!!
Marin County has a shortage of athletic fields and no indoor soccer fields. With six months when rain can cause flooding, muddy and unplayable fields – the field shortage is a real problem for athletic teams. With a shortage of playing fields, the existing fields get overused and damaged creating divots, holes and other hazards that cause injury to players. Consequently, in most years, the grassy fields are closed 6 months out of the year due to poor condition and hazards. Winter practice and training field facilities are needed because the closest all-weather facility is in Petaluma.
